The last time Tool played in New York was in 2006 on tour for their new album “10,000 Days.” That was also the last time Tool released a new album. A lot has changed since then, but if there is one thing we can count on it’s that Tool can still put on a great show.

The set started at 9:15pm as one of two closing acts of the 2017 Governors Ball Festival (the other being Wiz Kalifa on the other side of Randall’s Island). While their set was one hour and 45 minutes of non-stop prog-rock, their signature 8 minute long songs allowed for only an 11 song set list;

“The Grudge”
“Parabola”
“Schism”
“Opiate”
“Ænema”
“Jambi”
“Third Eye”
Drum Solo
“Forty-Six & 2”
“Sweat”
“Vicarious”
“Stinkfist”

Maynard James Keenan spoke to the crown very little throughout the set, but after playing “Schism” he broke his silence. “Fox News, Huff Post, Trump, Facebook, they are not your enemy. Ignorance is your enemy. That’s the fight. If you disagree, this next song is for you.” They then proceeded to play “Opiate” which features the opening lyric of “Choices always were a problem for you.”

Admittedly it seemed like an odd choice to go with a prog-rock group to close out GovBall, let alone a group who has not released new music in over a decade. Tool showed they can still draw crowds and put on a stunning show both musically and visually, and creating an experience that will be not be forgotten anytime soon.
