Tool’s headline slot at Download 2019 marked the metal band’s return to this side of the Atlantic for the first time in over a decade.

The performance clashed with thrash metal headliners Slayer in their final UK show, but drew one of the most concentrated acts of the whole weekend with studio-tight precision and mesmerising visuals that invaded the Main Stage screens.

Here’s the Tool set list from Download:

  • Ænema
  • The Pot
  • Parabola
  • Descending
  • Schism
  • Invincible
  • Intolerance
  • Jambi
  • Forty Six & 2
  • Part of Me
  • Vicarious
  • (-) Ions
  • Stinkfist

The rock band showcased two new songs ‘Descending’ and ‘Invincible’, two sprawling epics of metal virtuosity that demonstrate the instrumental versatility of the band and mark a new era for Tool.

But they also performed old favourites – very old favourites. ‘Hands up if you’re under 27? When we made this song, you weren’t even sperm,’ was one of his only words of the show before launching into ‘Part of Me’.

It’s been a good thirteen years since Donington Park last heard ‘Parabola’ performed live – and with Tool’s new album anticipated for autumn 2019, here’s hoping the next wait won’t be as long.
