With all the technology available to make an artist’s performance literally explode on stage, it is almost impossible to imagine an acoustic set can steal the thunder of all the other artist performing at an event. However, on Friday night, Meg Myers passion-filled performance did just that. The Tennessee native with the assistance of just a guitar brought emotion and passion to an audience who couldn’t get enough of her soulful lyrics.
The 95X Big XCuse held at the Bud Light Amphitheater on Papermill Island in the town of Baldwinsville featured some of the best music from underrated bands that are just beginning to make a name for themselves in alternative music. Bands such as the Silversun Pickups, who were the headliners and I Don’t Know How But They Found Me, whose song Choke, rose to #13 on the Billboard Top 40 Alternative songs this week, as well as a local band Trench all brought their best performances. However, they couldn’t touch the heart and soul that Myers brought to her performance. Friday night’s concert is just another example of how an artist’s individual sound and passionate performance can steal the show from her counterparts.
Meg Myers put every ounce of energy and emotion into her performance and at certain moments had to sit down to regain her vigor. Especially during her cover of the Kate Bush song Running Up That Hill, which she told the audience, was intensely emotional for her. Myers whose repertoire includes all self-written songs, Running Up That Hill is the only cover Myers has ever recorded, seems to fit perfectly with her brand of music. Incidentally, the music video for the song Running Up That Hill is animated with the coloring pages from over 2100 children seamlessly edited together.
Those who purchased a VIP pass for the 95X Big XCuse were able to participate in a meet and greets with I Don’t Know How But They Found Me,Silversun Pickups and Meg Myers. Myers easy-going nature was obvious as she stepped out from behind the autograph table and posed for pictures with fans. She has not let any of her success keep her closeted from her fans and it is obvious that her feet are firmly planted on the ground. Her natural charm and charisma set starstruck fans at ease as she chatted easily and engaged, with those anxious and excited to meet her, like an old friend.
Myers whose first album was released in 2012, has been slowly building a loyal following with songs like Desire, Monster and her latest release Running Up That Hill. Her lyrically forceful Indie rock is full of the intensity of her feelings and creates a connection with her audience through shared experiences. Although she hasn’t reached the full-on stardom of the mainstream music scene, her unique sound is propelling her in that direction. It is fairly easy to predict that she will continue to steadily rise through the ranks to take her place among the biggest stars of the day.
