Ills are a three piece electronic band from Melbourne, Australia. Since their inception in 2011 the band have been creating ambient soundscapes that mesh beautifully with a late 90’s UK trip-hop style. Their debut EP ‘Thread’ attracted the attention of many fans and musicians alike, the band followed two years later with the EP ‘A Warm Reception’ and now after a further two years their newest EP ‘Can I Go With You To Go Back To My Country’ has finally graced our ears.

‘Keep’ and ‘Let Me Have Just One’ are at the centre of this EP both literally and figuratively, they both express sounds more routed in contemporary pop music, relying on structure and lyrics more than the rest of the tracks. The lyrics are delicate and laced with harmonies although their meaning is more morose, this is juxtaposed by a light and blissful sound. In tracks such as Aves, A / B / A and Substitutions the focus is more heavily placed on the sound and tone over lyrics and structure. The EP combines a complex mix of soft synthesisers loops with strong, gated drums and a muted bass, applying a trip-hop background to an atmospheric centre. ‘Can I Go With You’ could be likened to Radiohead in the ‘Kid A’ period with the nostalgic feel and meticulousness of The XX.

It’s easy to hear the progression of style and talent in listening to the bands oeuvre. ‘Can I Go With You To Go Back To My Country’ has a much cleaner and precise sound to it. Gone is the clutter that made their earlier work seem relatively messy and disjointed, leaving only a puristic and warming sound. The band have really found their stride in this latest release creating deep melodies that help relax and sooth the listener.

‘Can I Go With You To Go Back To My Country’ is out now on Solitaire. The full track-listing is as follows…
