If blistering guitars, thunderous drums and howling vocals are your thing then come in, sit down and busy yourselves with Brooklyn based trio GHXST’s new EP ‘Nowhere’.
Atmospheric doom-rock is in full effect here as it picks its way through these six new tracks and leaves you as far from the warmth and safe surroundings of your partners embrace as could be imagined. This is relentless, hardened music that offers no apologies; and why should it?
The ‘Nowhere EP’ follows 2013’s ‘Black Camaro’ release; the first to be released on the ever impressive CLUB.THE.MAMMOTH label. The six pieces of music on show vary in quality though. Certainly ‘Nowhere’ and ‘No Luck’ impress. The latter is the most approachable of the tracks and its pace and ferocity should be applauded. ‘Slow Down’ is too bogged down by its instrumentation and distortion to be able to clearly understand what’s going on underneath. Played in a live environment I’m sure it would offer another dimension to proceedings but via headphones and on a one-to-one basis it lacks the likability of the aforementioned tracks.
Certainly, this release won’t be for everyone, in the same way that six Lady Gaga tracks wouldn’t be for someone else. However, in the scheme of things I know what I’d rather listen to; and it doesn’t come with a flame projecting bra.
The Nowhere EP is released on the 26th January 2015, via CLUB.THE.MAMMOTH.
