Peterborough based quartet Airways’ debut EP ‘Starting To Spin’ is packed full of promise, without doubt making them ones to keep your eyes and ears on over the next few months. The indie rock band have already had huge support from the industry and have supported the likes of Nothing But Thieves, The Hunna and Sunset Suns on full UK tours. Having formed just over two years ago, these lads have worked their arses off and now with the EP finally here, all the hard work is starting to pay off.
It’s hard to place ‘Starting To Spin’ into one category as each track brings a different feel to the EP; the title track is much more rock led with some interesting synths, whereas ‘Mate’ is more of an indie pop tune with similarities to early Circa Waves. Creating a five track album with five completely different songs is something which is very difficult and not something that not many bands manage to do. However Airways manage it with ease, and with Jake’s instantly recognisable vocals it brings all the tracks together to make Airways what they are.

The opening track ‘One Foot’ was the bands debut single released just under a year ago and has already had huge success with support from BBC introducing, Radio 1 and Spotify. The track starts with downtempo percussion and bass alongside Jake’s unique vocal range, which soon builds to a more rock ’n’ roll vibe with captivating riffs and layered vocals. In turn creating an atmospheric chorus that makes it easy to understand how this band have gained such a huge following in such a small amount of time.
Bass led ‘White Noise Boys’ is next up, and is set to be a firm favourite from the album, imagining how this track will play out live is an exciting prospect for Airways. Starting off with a brilliant heavy bass line that continues throughout, it quickly forms into an extremely addictive chorus that crowds will be singing along to at the top of their voices, alongside infectious riffs and glistening vocals.
Airways have just released the video for their latest single ‘Reckless Tongue’ which also features on the EP, with the video focusing in on an edgy studio performance alongside black and white film photos of the band, it’s clear that the quartet are going to go far. With this track perhaps being the most rock led of the five, it’s a perfect introduction to the debut EP. A raucous guitar led chorus, fiery bass lines, and quirky lyrics; it’s fueled with energy and is one that is sure to get the crowds going as they head out on tour.
Airways have certainly made their mark with this EP; pure originality in each track with raw emotion, confidence and style delivered throughout, we can be sure we’ll be hearing a lot more from these lads in the coming months. To celebrate the success of ‘Starting To Spin’, Airways have a free show at Also Known As in Banbury tonight, followed by a support slot with Nothing But Thieves on their UK tour at the end of May and their own five date headline tour taking place at the start of July, with various festival slots over the summer thrown in for good measure.
