Florida band Surfer Blood will release their new album ‘Snowdonia’ next month.
The indie rock band will also be announcing a number of UK dates this year. They have one show lined up at London Oslo on March 23 2017.
‘Snowdonia’ is the fourth album by Surfer Blood. It is also the first to be released since the loss of their guitarist Thomas Fekete to cancer last May.
The album is influenced by Fekete’s loss and is led by a new line-up. With bassist Kevin Williams leaving the band, frontman John Paul Pitts and drummer Tyler Schwarz are now joined by Lindsey Mills on bass and Michael McCleary on guitar. All four bandmates are from the same high school in West Palm Beach, Florida.

‘Six Flags in F or G’, the first song released from the album, was written by Pitts while coping with the loss of Fekete. He speaks about the composition of the song: “It’s unlike anything we’ve done before. When I was writing it I was listening to a lot of Swell Maps, Can, and The Breeders, all bands that Thom got me into. Even in his absence his tastes and sensibilities continue to influence my writing. We used a lot of pedals and effects: there’s an amp drop, an octave pedal, and even a way pedal in the second half. We were going for the guitar tone from T. Rex’s ‘Monolith’ and I think we got pretty close.”
With Pitts also affected by his mother’s diagnosis with cancer, ‘Snowdonia’ explores the themes and ideas of mortality and the delicate nature of life. The new album will be released on February 3rd and it is set to be a promising reemergence for the indie rock band.
