I feel utterly blessed at the moment. It seems that every gig or album I review ranges anywhere from good to excellent. I am, it would appear, on a roll. Gone are the cold gloomy days of winter and its offerings of Jacco Gardner, Stereophonics and Bastille (a band with better hair and stylists than songs).
And if proof were needed then look no further than the “Smith Westerns” and their very excellent third LP “Soft Will”, released by Mom + Pop Music.
This Chicago four-piece have created something so laid back that the only way to listen to it is in exactly that way…horizontal. The glam-rock feel to their self titled first album and indeed their 2011 release “Dye It Blonde” has gone. In its place are beautiful and melodic tunes that, apologies for sounding cheesy, remind you of long summer days and have such a feel-good factor you find yourself scrambling for the repeat button.
“3am Spiritual” and “XXIII” demand to be listened to loudly. Producer Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, We are Scientists, Foals) has taken the groups stunning song writing and complimented this with his years of experience to produce a masterpiece.
