Twenty years after forming, Gojira have realised their sixth studio album ‘Magma’. The four piece heavy metal band from France give us more quick paced metal, deep lyrics and solid riffs dirty enough to make your ears bleed.
In what is arguably the band’s best album to date, Gojira have slowed down the tempo slightly compared to past albums without sacrificing that awesome Gojira sound the fans have come to love. ‘Magma’ gives ten new tracks for us to get stuck into, which are placed perfectly together to get the full satisfaction from every song.
The opening track ‘The Shooting Star’ is a slow, deep track to introduce the album and sets up for the rest of album nicely, building excitement as it goes on. The title track from the album ‘Magma’ is the longest at over six minutes long, and gives us everything that is Gojira: deep lyrics, hard hitting guitar and plenty of feeling flowing through it.

The finishing track ‘Liberation’ is a calm and slow instrumental piece that uses a classical guitar and bongo drums to ease us out and wind us down from the album it works well as an outro, but leaves you feeling like maybe they could have done more with it to end the album with a bit more of a punch.
Gojira, like other heavy metal band, are battering us with their music, but Gojira just seem to be doing that bit better than most right now; and the release of ‘Magma’ proves that. On a run of albums each as good as the last, the band seems to keep growing and progressing every time. Gojira are definitely a band to listen to if you’re into heavy metal music, just make sure you have a neck brace to hand for when the head banging stops!
‘Magma’ is out now via Roadrunner Records.
