Beat oriented, orchestral electronic music creator Tatsuya Oe, aka Dark Model, is back in 2017 with a brand new album entitled ‘Saga.’ The Japanese producer is currently based in New York City, where he has created a new collection of songs. This new record is Oe’s second effort as his electronica producing moniker, but some industry greats are already very aware of his work. For instance, famed DJ and producer Fat Boy Slim has called Dark Model’s music as “fucking insane!” So does the composer’s sophomore effort live up to the hype?

Since Oe implements styles and sounds from differing genres, you can imagine that this album has some epic tunes. His orchestration could stand on its own, especially on songs like ‘Rage and Redemption’ and ‘Storm Goddess’, but the electronica side of his music is a worthy addition to the compositions. Orchestration, operatic choir work, and tastes of dub-step and other club music makes for an entertaining full length album.

Unfortunately, that’s all there really is to this album. Sure, it has levels of great musicianship and arrangement techniques. In that regard, it’s a must-have record for aspiring DJs, composers and producers. But, once you’ve heard an orchestra and choir mixed with electronic beats, you’re going to get tired of it. Unless you’re in the mood for this eclectic mix of music all in one place, you’re not going to have a good time with ‘Saga.’

Oe is clearly a genius when it comes to music that shouldn’t work well together becoming something quite enjoyable and inspiring. While ‘Saga’ is sure to please Dark Model’s fans and peers in the industry, there’s little chance it makes a mark outside of the fanbase.

That said, filmmakers should be scrambling to hire Oe to score a project sometime soon. His music is made for the big screen, but not your weekly playlist of “must hear” tracks.
