The music scene can be a fickle beast sometimes. Bring up the subject of ‘The Slow Readers Club’ with any indie inclined music fan within the Manchester area and there’s a good chance you’ll spend the next 30 minutes discussing where you’ve seen them live, their self-titled debut LP and just why they haven’t hit the big time yet. Have the same discussion anywhere else in the UK and you’ll get blank looks and soon find yourself discussing yesterday’s inclement weather.
However, the roar of the “fickle beast” is about to reach a more populated prey as LP number two, ‘Cavalcade’, from the Manchester 4-piece is about to showcase these regional favorites to an altogether wider audience.
‘Cavalcade’ (out now via Extenso Music) is a brooding, sometimes dark, collection of tracks that combine both electronica with fresh howling guitars and frenetic drums. An obvious ‘Killers’ comparison could be made but this LP is more mentally absorbing than anything the Las Vegas band have ever shared. The sound is sombre at times but strangley melodic; containing wickedly addictive hooks and chorus’s that will stick with you long after the album finishes.
Such is the impressive level of song-writing it’s difficult to pick out a showcase track from the LP. Certainly ‘Start Again’, ‘I Saw a Ghost’, ‘Forever in Your Debt’ and ‘Days Like This Will Break Your Heart’ form a hearty and evenly matched group of contenders. All of these tracks show signs of the obvious song-writing maturity from their debut and are certain to become fan favourites.
This release indicates a real sign of things to come from the Manchester band. Certainly each track contains an irresistible mix of emotion and drama, ensuring ‘Cavalcade’ offers some wonderful goose bumps moments.
