Easily able to consolidate such a range of influences – including her own extensive past – Miss Murphy celebrates over 20 years of musical activity with the release of her third solo collection.
‘Hairless Toys’ sounds like the definition of ‘no filler’ on an old-fashioned 8-track LP as she glides, confidently, through alternative, soulful, electronica. First single ‘Exploitation’ travels into unexpected contours, rhythms and soundscapes, from jazz guitar riffs to intelligent techno/house rhythm programs.
‘Based on a true story’ lyrics are simply the icing on a sufficient stand-alone instrumental. It’s extremely welcoming to hear dominant bass guitar (courtesy of Rob Mullarkey) on cuts like ‘Uninvited Guest’, and driving Dave de Rose drums accompanying Róisín Murphy’s storytelling lyrics.
It’s difficult to pick an overall highlight but ‘House of Glass’ may win over the indifferent to electronic soul as it weaves its phrases into complete magic over its near 7 minutes. The bare title track represents the timeless cut of an outstanding set.
‘Hairless Toys’ is out now on Play it Again Sam Records.
