This ‘Danny & the Champions of the World’ review was written by Marc Simonsson, a GIGsoup contributor.
Listening to a musician who wears his heart on his sleeve, and bares his soul through his work, is one the most uplifting situations one can experience. Danny Wilson and his band’s new album, ‘What Kind of Love’, oozes with emotion and passion – with every note being played at the same intensity that can only be reached when the musician truly loves what they do. Unfortunately on this occasion passion can only take you so far.
The opening track ‘Clear Water’ is the perfect happy-go-lucky introduction to the band’s blend of country and blues. With its use of a strong brass section, smooth guitar riffs and catchy lyrics, it’s your classic foot tapper and is a continuation of the obvious energy from the bands 2014 tour (the band are the kings of the tour scene). However, despite these positives the song lacks depth and originality and therein lays the problem with ‘What Kind of Love’ as a whole.
The remaining tracks on the album simply reinforce the all too familiar aspects of the opening song. Whether it is the predictable chorus of ‘Precious Cargo’ or the dated brass on ‘What Kind of Love’, ‘Danny & the Champions of the World’ have created an album that seems lack any real identity, or for that matter, any real originality. While the bands musical talent is clear for all to see it’s a little disappointing that this collection of tracks offer no real direction.

On the surface, ‘What Kind of Love’ has the right ingredients to make it a memorable album – a singer who has exquisite vocals, country pedal steel rhythms that demand much head-nodding, and ballads that gush with genuine moments of emotion. However, beyond these points you’re simply left with an average release that contains no real surprises and certainly no reason to revisit it.
It’s an uncomfortable feeling to criticise an album in which it is possible to hear the band enjoy their craft. There are without doubt wonderful moments of story-telling – and it’s impossible not to be impressed by the instrumentation – but generally this release disappoints.
