Genre-hopping NYC artist Brent Butler has teamed up with director Majiye Uchibeke to drive deep into the SoCal desert and bring his “In The Desert” single to life. The track, which features an immersive vocal hook from actor/musician Lauren Renahan, is taken from Brent’s debut record, L I L A C, which landed earlier this summer. Glistening synths play against Brent’s choppy and dynamic flow to create a vibe-fueled pop stand out.
“The story behind making this video is as serendipitous and beautiful as the spiritual experiences described in the lyrics. I had about 72 hours left in Los Angeles (supporting the release of L I L A C), when ‘@majshotit’ hit me up on the gram. He told me that he vibed with my music and we should shoot sometime if I’m ever in LA. “I’m there now,” I told him, “but flying back to NY mad soon.”
Within 48 hours we were about 100 miles outside the city shooting, “in the desert”… in the desert. On the surface, the song follows the narrator on a “walkabout” – as my Aussie friends might say – beginning in California, and following nature, or some higher consciousness, to find home. On a more secular, literal level, it’s about music as a vehicle for self discovery, fulfillment, and replenishment on what can often be a confusing and turbulent path. Meeting Majiye (who had recently relocated from Nigeria, following his dream to become a filmmaker), and shooting this video was, for me, the culmination of all those elements. It’s safe to say I boarded the plane heading home the next day feeling pretty damn fulfilled.”
