The convention-breaking artist, Wrené, debuted her album Live Wire on February 26th. Each song presents a story highlighted by the addition of foley sounds, original samples, and subliminal messages. From EDM, rock, pop, to metal, Wrené jumps in between the lines with her eccentric yet mesmerizing styles to unfold a world of her own. Wrené’s solid, deep, eerie vocals remind one of Within Temptation or A. A WILLIAMS. The raspiness intertwined with a smoothness and clarity that heightens her lyrics’ overall narrative and reflective characteristics, rendering them both poetic and genuinely touching.

Some of the highlighted tracks in this album include “Unravel” and “No Face”. “Unravel” was previously released as a single, and the song depicts the heartbreak that comes with strained relationships, the ones that only seem to take and never give. The emotional despair set to an ambient instrumental and beat wrapped beautifully both lyrically and sonically. The lyric video for  “No Face” portrays mental abstractions that represent an almost inescapable void one enters. It resembles an emotional roller coaster that’s both dark and mysterious, emphasizing the genre-bending and experimental characteristics of the album. Furthermore, Wrené’s vocals are accompanied by heavy, unconventional, and unpredictable chord progressions and instrumentations. While not often seen in mainstream popular music, Live Wire possesses high artistic value presented in emotional, aggressive, explosive, mellow, and sorrowful ways.

Through her unconventional song structure and experimentalism, Wrené mends the line between reality and surrealism in her work. She is an actor, poet, and vocalist fluent in many singing techniques. Wrené brings a unique sound to life through unorthodox musical arrangements and haunting vocal performance. The integration of Pop melodies, Avant-garde instrumentation, and soulful vocals lend themselves to an ethereal soundscape, where the counterpoints of beauty and darkness coalesce. The duality of organic and electronic instrumentation characterizes a sound that fuses elements both classical and modern. The incorporation of many musical influences within each song lends itself to innovation within the experimental Pop genre. The lyrics employ poetic imagery, exploring both the dark and the enlightened. The conscious decision to disregard lyrical and visual boundaries allows for freedom of expression and celebrates the strength in emotional vulnerability.
