Shane Ghostkeeper shares new self-aware single “Why Do I Hide”

Ghostkeeper is the project of Shane Ghostkeeper, an artist from Calgary recognized for his songwriting, singing and guitar playing. Shane spent his adolescence isolated by Northern Alberta’s geography, listening to country music records and developing an admiration for individuals who had the ability to convey rich stories through song.

Later he found another world in the self-aware genres of art rock and experimental folk. Here, he developed his own storytelling language with which he could voice the traditional songwriting he grew up with, which has come full circle to make his first Country music inspired record.

Shane Ghostkeeper’s new single, “Why Do I Hide,” is about how our egos keep us from sharing what is needed to build and/or save a relationship. The song is an apology for that failure, after the demise, on behalf of both parties.

Can you talk to us about the inspiration behind your single, “Why Do I Hide”?

The inspiration for ‘Why Do I Hide’, came from seeing important relationships come to an end; from witnessing the ‘giving up’ point in spite of an inner ability to mend it. This song is my way of grieving these gone by relationships by accepting their end and honouring the goodness from it all … and giving it a proper goodbye where one was due.

How do you think your community has contributed to your success?

My community is my perpetual foundation: my inspiration, my motivation, and my education. My family and peers give the confidence to keep moving forward with my music.

What was the first thing that got you interested in music?
The notion that if I work hard with enough passion, I could someday represent and honour my unique, modern Métis culture through song on a pop culture platform.
Describe to our audience your music-making process.
When I am emotional, I pick up my guitar and start noodling around to find the vibe that suits my particular mood. Then I start singing wordless melodies until and sometimes simultaneously, the lyrics that reconcile my emotion start to flow.
What advice would you give other musicians?

Allow yourself plenty of time to break away from your musical entrepreneurship so that you can explore all of the uncommon and unique musical ideas that are genuinely and authentically you, rather than the ideas that are currently selling.

How did it feel when you released this new music?
I am excited. This release is a step towards diversifying my song writing pallet. ‘Why Do I Hide’ is among a collection of songs from my exploration of the country music that I was raised on. An overdue musical venture for my people back home in northern Alberta.
And finally, if you could collaborate with any musician/band, who would it be? And why?

I’d be honoured and ecstatic at the chance to collaborate with Daniel Romano! He has galactic creativity and killer musical chops as an instrumentalist and a singer.
