Jack Conman – Seventh Sense Libido

Hull's sultry singer-songwriter comes with a banquet of beautiful sounds

Jack Conman first lit up people’s hearts with a performance of his song Greatly Hasty on YouTube channel COLORS, before going on to receive critical acclaim from Clash Magazine, support from BBC Radio 1 & 6Music, plus clocking up over a million Spotify streams and a coveted slot at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

Now Jack releases his self-produced debut album Seventh Sense Libido as we move on from the most challenging of years and into the first signs of spring & rebirth.

Seventh Sense Libido marries the sexual politics of Cigarettes After Sex with the romanticism of Jeff Buckley & Pete Doherty and leads to Jack’s most cohesive body of work yet. The album’s title is a play on the psychological thriller The Sixth Sense, which he watched as a young boy, & seems fitting in a way that various songs on the album relate to how the “Jack” of today has been shaped by events that happened to him in his childhood, as it is with all of us. The result is an intimate & reflective album which, through its honesty, affords the listener their own chance of self-reflection.

Opening track (& 1st single) Come Back in the Room tells of the emotional push & pull experienced when arguing with a loved one, while track 5 (& 2nd single) Before You Love Me with its strikingly intimate vocal performance, beautifully depicts that moment when we take the first steps in a romantic relationship. Other key tracks from the album include The Beauty of Women, in which Jack sings about being in awe of women as an entity and The Second I Choke, the only track on the album to feature another vocalist (and co-writer), namely Manchester musician Leonard Hammersley, with its lyric about feeling caught up in an unhealthy & controlling relationship.

Jack says of the release the main theme of the album is that you always feel like a child & never fully ready to handle your own emotions. The songs are about various relationships in my life, which have often been very intense & controlling but I never seem to realise they’re so toxic until I get out! Often led along by the sex & excitement –  the more erratic & uncontrollable a situation is, the more I’m drawn in. The album has been a healing process through which I’ve discovered I’m not the only one with these thoughts & feelings”.

Jack started his musical journey as the drummer in a Nickelback covers band but things began to really come together when he was signed to Warren Records (part of the highly influential Hull based Warren Youth Project), where he met friend & mentor Stew Baxter from indie band LIFE & released his first EP Euphoria Springs. Then, with the release of his 2nd EP Heddison in 2018, Jack’s audience grew considerably, in part as a result of his feature on COLORS, which showed off his dexterous percussive guitar playing and soulful, weathered vocals. Now, with the release of his debut album Seventh Sense Libido, it’s time that Jack Conman slipped back into the lexicon of music fans.
