For their newest body of work, Caravãna Sun took to a remote location in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney in Australia’s New South Wales. Thankfully untouched by the fires that engulfed much of the nearby area, the studio became their safe-haven away from distractions of the outside world. Unchartered territories were explored, leading the band to new discoveries both creatively and spiritually.
“Charlie” marks the beginning of a new chapter for Caravãna Sun. An uplifting jangle-pop number, the song is an empathetic, almost cathartic experience. Though on first impressions “Charlie” might appear overtly melancholic, the message behind it is nothing but positive: you are not alone.
“On a personal level, the song was written out of a difficult time where I’d dropped out of touch with myself,” explains lead vocalist Ant. “After booking in to see a psychologist to talk it over, the heart of this song dropped out of the sky. The overall meaning is that sometimes, things are not as dark as they seem. If we could just reach out and be open with people, we’d see that support and love is just a phone call away. The musical process was very organic. We created the music for this song based around a guitar riff Luke wrote in Europe. As the song flew off into this beautiful moving beast, I found the chorus melody and we called it day knowing that we had the bones of something special. I took the song back into my space and crafted the lyrics and overall message and before we knew it, we were in the studio in the Blue Mountains with what turned out to be such an amazing experience.”
In the official video for “Charlie”, the boys capture the simple pleasures found through friendship and day-to-day experiences; from chilling on the beach to sharing tinnies on a fishing boat, the four-piece stick to their charming, laidback form. Shot using a mixture of lo-fi, analogue and digital cameras, the finished piece is a heartwarming, family-style home movie. Because that’s who Caravãna Sun are: not just a band, but a family.
“The video is a good time with friends. It’s a snapshot into Caravãna Sun and the love we have for each other. It’s a symbol of friendship and a true representation of what it means to be there for your friends. From boat adventures to backstage hangs, the love runs deep. We wanted to portray the importance of being open with friends and know that support is always there for one another. When we set out on the water to film this video, we noticed the boat we had (which was built in 1950 out of aeroplane material) had a hole in it and we couldn’t stop ‘cause we’d all end up sinking to the bottom of the harbour. We pressed on and laughed our way out of a sticky situation, ending up with a whole bunch of hilarious footage.”
