Following the release of her atmospheric debut single ‘Distractions’, we got Priestess to tackle our Boom! questions about that track, and her plans for the rest of 2020 …

How did you first start making music?

I first starting making music at a young age just writing songs using my dads guitar and my mother’s piano. I had a band which was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had. The beautiful people in it were so talented and we had a blast. Branching out on my own is the next evolution.

What artists have influenced your sound?

Too many to name! But to give a long short list: Massive Attack, Moderat, Fever Ray, Alice in Chains, Maya Jane Coles, Little Dragon, Sevdaliza. My roots also come from Led Zeppelin, Grunge, Metal and Folk so I’m sure they entwine themselves in parts of the music in subtle ways too.

What was the inspiration behind your new single?

Distractions was written as an exploration of the disposable and often obsessive landscape of modern relationships. With feelings of an ancient ethereal electronic sea shanty, it’s core meaning lies very much in the present moment of dispensability.

What are your plans and hopes for the rest of the year?

I’m excited about creating some really interesting online content with one of my producers Gest4lt. I’m making some videos and excited about some new releases. Fingers crossed for some live shows.

What have been your favourite records of 2020 so far?

Definitely my favourites have been ‘Inner Song’ by Kelly Lee Owens and ‘Ghost V: Together’ by Nine Inch Nails. Also my friend Kathleen Francis who is incredible released her Debut single ‘Define’ which I loved.

If you could give one tip to any aspiring bands what would it be?

Create art because it’s in your veins. Don’t worry too much about the rest or you won’t get out of bed! And it hinders the flow. Just do what you do, make what you make and keep going.
