If you recognise Beks, chances are you were a fan of rollicking punk band Rackett. After achieving great success with the Sydney based outfit, she set her sights on a solo career, diving into the world of alternative pop. Her latest offering ‘The Thing About Us’ is an electrifying burst of love and loss, as she tackles the idea of falling in love with a close friend.
The accompanying video depicts Beks in vibrant hues to reflect the mood of the song, beginning with a deep pink as she aimlessly scrolls through dating apps, and lighter blues as it flashes back to time spent with her ex lover/friend. Complications that can come with dating someone close to you are well known, and Beks explores the aftermath of the situation when it comes crumbling down in a heartfelt manner. Describing her own personal experience that inspired the lyrics, she quotes “This song encapsulates the feeling of being in love and then out of love with your best friend. Your best friend that you party and wake up hungover with and then realise that you’ve crossed a line of no return, blurred the boundaries and you’re desperate to find a way back. The thing about us is there was never an ‘us’ only ever ‘you and I’”.
Taken from her ‘Beks 2021’ mixtape, the track is proof that her songwriting abilities are next level, as it is brimming with infectious hooks and a punchy chorus. With nods from Rolling Stone Magazine and Music Feeds, she has been likened to an ‘Australian Dua Lipa’ for her brand of exuberant, fun electro pop that boasts an energy that the music scene needs.
