A to Z : Cooza

Cooza, is a masked alt-folk musician from the UK. His music draws inspiration from the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Big Thief and Flatsound, as well as the natural world & love’s complexities. On September 18th, 2020, his debut album will be released. It’s a freak folk project called ‘Our Day’, featuring gentle and sometimes chaotic production to reflect the ups & downs of love. The first single (the title track) and the second single, ‘Wooden Frame’, are both out now.

A song which made you want to make music

I Forget Where We Were by Ben Howard

Best album ever written

Blue by Joni Mitchell

Craziest moment you’ve experienced as an artist

Making a whole album during lockdown whilst being trapped.

Deepest lyrics one of your songs features – and quote them

“You go on about your future like I’m not in it / It hurts to admit it when you’re in mine.” – Our Day

Easiest song you wrote

I Can See New Zealand From Here

Favourite show you’ve ever played

Basel in Switzerland

Guest you’d most like to feature on one of your records

Adrianne Lenker

Happiest moment you’ve experienced as an artist

The reception from the first single to my new album. So warm. Also just sleeping after the album was done.

Interesting fact about you, or a band member

I am a raging queer. More queers in the folk scene please.

Jokes you have in the band

As a one-man band, they’re all… inside jokes.

Kicking off your set is best with which song

Ornamental, or Near Me which is unreleased.

Longest distance you’ve travelled to play a show

Switzerland. Someone book me for more shows please.

Musical instrument you, or your band, could not live without

Guitar. Or my mouth. Makes some cool noises.

New band or artist you’d recommend

Abby Meysenburg is a killer songwriter making timeless classics.

Opening for this band or artist would be ideal – name one and more importantly why

Aldous Harding. She’s a freak of folk music just like I am, and her live shows are the most captivating things I’ve ever witnessed.

Place you’d most like to tour

Canada. Also would love to play in Nashville.

Quote that you’d like to pass on to our readers

“And I said to me, I would like to be someone kind over cavalier. What have I done with my years?” – Ben Howard from A Boat To An Island, Pt.2 / Agatha’s Song

Reason for the title of your recent / forthcoming release

The whole album is a series of snapshots from a relationship told through the narrative timeframe of a day- starting with waking from a dream full of questions, and ending on going to sleep and falling into a new dream that promises more freedom. ‘Our Day’ is about how you can claim a whole day as your own, forgetting the world exists when you’re with someone you love. It’s about trying to keep the feelings of love from that day alive for however long.

See us live at

I’ll let you know when the world isn’t ablaze anymore.

The old days of music were better than those current, do you agree?

Use a single word to describe the music industry

Variations you’d like to do on any of your songs

Live! Full band!

What bands have you seen live and regretted?

None. The bad ones teach me how not to put on a show.

XFactor, The Voice etc – good or bad for the music industry? Discuss

Bad. Most contestants aren’t artists, they’re karaoke performers and we just sit there and watch. It’s made so many people passive music listeners.

You could have written any song in history, which would you pick?

I Forget Where We Were by Ben Howard. Or Song of Solomon by Kate Bush.

Zoo animal that best describes the personality of you or the band

Goat. A zoo goat.
