Keith Mitchell, longtime drummer of the 90’s dream-pop band Mazzy Star and former member of Opal, passed away on Sunday. The cause of death remains unconfirmed.
Mazzy Star’sHope Sandoval and David Roback issued a statement on the band’s Facebook.
Our hearts are broken. We have lost the much beloved Keith Mitchell, a very talented and amazing drummer that we have had the privilege to work with for many years, he will live in all of our hearts forever… We’ll miss you Big Fella.
After being with Monitor and Green on Red, Mitchell drummed for Opal. Playing alongside David Roback and Kendra Davis, they released 1987’s ‘Happy Nightmare Baby’ before Davis’s departure. Roback then inducted Sandoval to the group, which was reborn into Mazzy Star.
Mitchell performed on all the band’s albums. These included their debut ‘She Hangs Brightly,’their 1993 famed ‘So Tonight That I Might See,’ and ‘Among My Swan.’ To conclude, he played on their comeback LP ‘Season of Your Day,’ Mazzy Star’s first album in 17 years.
