Weezer stream song from upcoming album with heavy metal themes

What do Van Halen and Weezer have in common? Musically you’d say very little.

But Van Halen is who Weezer have obviously decided to name their new album after. It’s called Van Weezer.

No this is not a joke or some kind of weird parody Spinal Tap thing. It is real, an album will exist under that title. There’s even artwork for it as you can see below.

And as you can see above there’s even a new song from the album that’s been released as well.

It’s called ‘The End of the Game and there’s even a music video for it, which you can check out below.

The video follows a alien who attends a party thrown by teenagers before being beamed back up to its spaceship while throwing devil horns.

Which brings us back to the musical themes of the new music.

This clearly isn’t the Weezer you knew from songs like ‘Buddy Holly’ back in the 1990’s.

As frontman Rivers Cuomo explained in an interview with Consequence of Sound, “the inspiration came from our live shows, where, in the middle of ‘Beverly Hills’, unlike on the album, everything stops and I just break out with this crazy guitar solo. We noticed that, recently, the crowd just goes crazy when I do that. So it feels like maybe the audience is ready for some shredding again.”

The new song is certainly heavy with a riff that wouldn’t sound out of place in Black Sabbath song at the centre of it.

The band says that along with the Sabbath nod fans can expect other songs to take influences from KISS, Metallica and of course Van Halen.

Van Weezer will be released on May 15, 2020.
