Hughstreet clothing store H&M has come under fire after the retail website posted a photo of a young black boy wearing a green hoodie with the words, “Coolest monkey in the jungle”. Along with the rest of the Internet, activists and celebrities have been shocked that they thought this was a good idea in 2018.
The company have since released a statement toward the backlash, “We sincerely apologise for offending people with this image of a printed hooded top. The image has been removed from all online channels and the product will not be for sale in the United States. We believe in diversity and inclusion in all that we do and will be reviewing all our internal policies accordinly to avoid any future issues.” Despite the apology it just wasn’t enough for the weekend who has since cut ties.
Among a number of celebrities and public figures The Weeknd has taken to the twitter to share his thoughts on the matter, tweeting, “Woke up this morning shocked and embarrassed by this photo,” He added along side the image, “I’m deeply offended and will not be working with @HM anymore…” Cutting his ties with the swedish clothing company who back in 2017 he launched his Spring Icons collection last March and a second menswear collection the following September.
