The alternative-electronic duo, 9ToEarth (Chilean artist Visonia (Nicolas Estany), and singer and songwriter Kika Stepa) have debuted their first EP Kogarashi Tales. A mix of electronic and alternative styles, 9ToEarth makes an indelible mark on the indie music scene with thoughtfully crafted poetic lyrics that penetrate the mind and showcase the vulnerability of the duo.
Based in the UK, 9ToEarth says the Japanese culture was the inspiration for this EP. “I based many ideas for the lyrics on the idea of contrast that I believe is a strong part of the Japanese culture,” says Kika Stepa (songwriter of the duo). After a trip to Japan, Kika felt overwhelmed with inspiration from Tokyo’s hectic city atmosphere that contrasted its legendary parks and shrines. Experimenting with this contrast by mixing fragile, naked feelings with depth and darkness of raw industrial sound, Kogarashi Tales explores the differences between old darkness with new wave influences.
Meaning the wind preceding the onset of winter, Kogarashi is a Japanese word that perfectly sums up the feeling of the album…. cold, windy, and mysterious. The album itself is a collection of stories that share the personal, yet universal, stories about love, loss, loneliness, dependence, and inner strength. Strong bass and sharp drums make 9ToEarth’s music danceable while emphasizing their dark vibe. “With the EP we wanted to reflect some of our struggles in life but also delve into the human psyche and illustrate it in our own words,” 9ToEarth said.
Kogarashi Tales is available for streaming on all major platforms.
