Composed for a string quartet & electronics, Tri Angle Records artist Vessel & violinist Rakhi Singh share another excerpt from new collaborative project.
Tri Angle Records Vessel has collaborated with violinist Rakhi Singh to create a new 30-minute movement of music entitled ‘Written in Fire’. The pair are set to play a headline London show tonight (April 11th) at Kings Place with more shows in Cardiff, Manchester & Glasgow in May. The second track from the record “Written in Fire (Excerpt 2)” is streaming online now.
Rakhi Singh and Seb Gainsborough (Vessel) met whilst working on a piece for Immix Ensemble. A strong bond over music was the result, with both enjoying feeling out of their depth in regards to each others’ taste and musical background. They began to write their first collaborative piece not long afterwards.
The result of this was Written in Fire. Composed for string quartet and electronics, it is a response to Czech composer Leos Janacek’s second string quartet, entitled Intimate Letters. Rather than write a piece in the style of Janacek, or recontextualise the original work for a modern audience, Written in Fire is a personal reaction to the cascade of feelings the piece provokes.
After being premiered at the 2018 edition of the Aldeburgh Music Festival, Written in Fire will be presented at various UK venues in 2019. They will be joined for some of these performances by Portuguese director and video artist Pedro Maia.
They are currently working on their second collaboration, a new commission for Manchester Collective inspired by Baroque music and John Milton’s Paradise Lost.
