Friday the 25th of November saw the release of the much-anticipated EP ‘Battle Ready’ release from folk/Americana musician John Tiller. Coming from Manchester, John Tiller takes influence from his hometown’s rich and diverse musical heritage, combining its working-class spirit with strong influences across the pond. In early November 2019, Tiller released the title track for his EP which attracted lots of positive attention from fans, which hundreds of responses on Twitter, thousands of listens on Spotify as well as a premiere from much-respected music magazine Americana UK, who noted that Tiller’s song was a showcase from serious talent.
The ‘Battle Ready’ EP demonstrates how Tiller is injecting life back into Bob Dylan’s songwriting style, taking the listener on the narrator’s personal journey of inner turmoil and truly evoking an intimate atmosphere.
In reference to his song-writing method he notes:
“I write a lot, it’s therapeutic for me. Prose, poetry. This set of ideas found their way into songs and I quite like the way that the longer pieces have to be edited down to satisfyingly fit the pop music form, so what’s left is an opaque, impressionist type of lyric that hints and suggests at a (usually dark) story, but we’re never sure if the narrator is reliable or whether to believe the tale being told.
