South London raised Pritt represents a new wave of diverse R&B. Her sound entwines Indian influences with Western trap leanings, sounding refreshingly unlike anything else on the scene. Her new single ‘Identity’ is produced by Jbyss and AVB, and was released on April 3rd 2020. Non-conforming melodies, a trademark feature of contemporary R&B, emphasise the message that Pritt is conveying through her lyrics: she, and other women, should not have to be subjected to outdated expectations about femininity. Infused heavily with trap elements and South Asian style melismas, Pritt unites her Tamil heritage with her London upbringings in a fresh and promising new track.
We caught up with Pritt regarding her newest single ‘Identity’, and she revealed the meaning behind the song’s artwork. The ‘ ஜ’ symbol commemorates the letters of the Tamil alphabet, expressing that regardless of multicultural complexities within a community, Pritt is proud of her background and it forms a major part of her identity.
In 2018, Pritt collaborated with BBC 1Xtra on an all-female lead project, featuring on an EP entitled BEHIND EVERY GREAT CITY. As of February 2020, Pritt’s recent release ‘Tunnel Vision’ was made BBC 1Xtra’s Introducing Track of the Week. As a pioneer for Asian females in R&B, there’s certainly big things to come for this young songstress.
