The National share new track ‘Guilty Party’

The National have shared the second single from their forthcoming album, ‘Sleep Well Beast’, due 8th September. ‘Guilty Party’ is the latest single from the record and it sees the band heading into a new direction.

In comparison to its predecessor, ‘The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness’, ‘Guilty Party’ is quieter and less chaotic. The track is slightly stripped back with a steady beat and piano keys. Its subtle background vocals add a touch of moodiness to the song. ‘Guilty Party’ is ambient and melancholic – in true National fashion.

According to frontman, Matt Berninger the tone of the new album is “really dark”. According to NME, he said: “I’m going very dark with the new National record, which is a place I love to go. People have always described our music as dark and say it goes very melancholy, somber places. They haven’t heard anything yet! This next thing is crazy.”

In order to celebrate the release of their seventh record, The National will be throwing a “Guilty Party” at New York’s Basilica Hudson on 14-15th July. The event will be a collaborative concert featuring performance from Buke & Gase, Nadia Sirota and others. Casey Reas, who directed the band’s videos for ‘Guilty Party’ and ‘The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness’, will contribute live projection mapping for the event.

The National have released just 700 tickets for each night. Each attendee will be given a limited edition “A-side vinyl 7” of Guilty Party & The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness”. A portion of ticket sales will proceed to Basilica Hudson itself. In conclusion, it sounds like an absolute dream.

‘Guilty Party’ and the album’s lead single, ‘The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness’ both showcase the new direction the Ohio quintet is heading in. Opting for a more electronic sound, The National seem to be adapting their music to the times, and yet are remaining organic and true to their unique and unmistakable sound.
