Shimmering pop artist Melissa Bel makes her 2019 debut with her iridescent new single Cotton Candy, out now via Belhop Records.
Much like the title suggests, Cotton Candy is an undeniably joy-filled single filled with honey-sweet harmonies, infectious melodies and a vibrant musicality throughout. The single combines Bel’s signature visceral lyricism with a killer hook to create a bona fide ear worm with soulful, earnest lyrics of intense yearning. Talking about the track, Bel elaborates “I’d had the title Cotton Candy floating around, then the lyrics to the first verse came to me and I thought, ‘this would be great for someone like Katy Perry.’ It wasn’t until I was jamming one day with the song’s producer, Thomas McKay, and he came up with some chords that I thought, ‘I have the perfect lyrics for this!’ Then I realised I wanted to record the song myself.”
Melissa grew up in Toronto listening to soul and classic rock and draws inspiration from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Christina Aguilera amongst others. Since moving to the UK, her critically acclaimed latest album In The Light – produced by Justin Gray (Amy Winehouse, John Legend, Joss Stone) – reached #49 on the iTunes Canada Top 200 Pop Chart and has received praise from the likes of Impose Magazine, Gigslutz and Celeb Mix to name a few. Melissa has released four albums to date and has opened for artists such as Kylie Minogue, Matthew Good, Joey Landreth and Maverick Sabre. She also co-wrote Avril Lavigne’s recent single, Tell Me It’s Over and is quickly becoming a sought-after songwriter and artist.
