KJ & The Fox release their sublimely edgy debut single ‘Perfect Moments’ , complete with lockdown-restricted video.

The single, recorded remotely by the East London four piece during lockdown, is inspired by a chapter in the existentialist novel Nausea, by Jean Paul Sartre, which explores the idea that the search for perfection ultimately becomes a burden.

Singer/ guitarist KJ aka Keith John Adams says: “The narrator tries to rekindle a relationship with a woman who’s obsessed with capturing perfect moments from life. I enjoyed plundering Sartre’s imagery for the lyrics and wanted the song’s title and chorus to mess with our expectations. A casual listener might think the song is a celebration of perfect moments, when it’s actually about their impossibility.”

Adams, whose solo singer songwriter career spawned plays on BBC Radios 1, 2, 3 and 6, tours of Europe, USA and Japan sharing bills with Deerhoof, Of Montreal & Apples in Stereo, put KJ & The Fox together for a one-off show at Dalston’s Servant Jazz Quarters but its success gave birth to a longer term project.  Bass duties are taken on by Scritti Politti’s Rhodri Marsden – also the force behind Article 54 and their rapturously acclaimed Brexit-inspired disco album ‘The Hustle’ – while drummer Tom Haines and guitarist Chris Branch are better known as composing/sound design partnership Brains and Hunch, as well as being members of the lounge jazz outfit The London Snorkeling Team.

In keeping with the song’s theme, it came about via a slightly obsessive route, “I went a bit crazy doing different arrangements,” says KJ, “…slow, fast, acoustic, electric, in different time signatures and even a reggae version that the world can definitely do without.”

The final, definitive version marks out exactly how KJ & The Fox intend to proceed from here.   After years of solo gigs, he had a moment of revelation on a South London dancefloor and decided rhythm needed to be at the heart of the band’s musical ethos.  He created the one that drives ‘Perfect Moments’ by beatboxing into a looping pedal.

‘Perfect Moments’, which was recorded by the band’s members individually under lockdown conditions then mastered by Ant Chapman of Collapsed Lung, is very much the first track of a KJ & The Fox album set to emerge on Vacilando ’68 Recordings in due course.  The modus operandi is simple – just keep writing songs until they have a collection that’s ready to be released.

‘Perfect Moments’ is out on June 26 through the Vacilando ’68 Recordings/Functional Electric label
