South Londonsinger-songwriter Just Charlii marks her first release of the new decade with single ‘My Company’, the first track from her forthcoming ‘Mood’ EP, out 10th July.
Pairing delicate piano keys with Charlii’s impressive vocal prowess, ‘My Company’ is an ode to enjoying your own company. The DIY-style official video sees her serenading the viewer through the lens of a grainy webcam – an ideal visual accompaniment for a track that deals with social media addiction and spending timealone.
“I’ve always been on the introverted side and unfortunately this can be seen as a bad thing,” Charlii explains. “As I get older I realise being able to just chill in your own company and learning to embrace yourself in your own space can be quite therapeutic.”
Releasing music since 2016, Charlii has received strong support from journalists and music publications alike, also attracting interest from the BBC Introducing platform. She released her sophomore EP ‘Phoenix’ last year, an exciting collection of modern R&B that tackled issues such as mental health and heartbreak.
With ‘Mood’ set to be released later in the year, Charlii explains that the five-track release represents a variety of different moods and feelings. “The EP doesn’t necessarily carry a theme but each song does represent an important mood that I think we all experience at some point,” she details. “Each song holds a meaning or situation that I have been through which makes this very personal to me. I hope in listening to the EP people will find something to relate to, and escape. A realisation that we all go through these emotions.”
The first page of a new musical chapter, ‘My Company’ is a sparse-yet-beautiful track that places Just Charlii’s vocals centre stage.
