British Musician, Writer and Producer Iwan Gronow moved to Manchester from Cornwall back in 2001; establishing himself as a prominent member of Manchester’s music scene with his band, Haven. Managed by the late Joe Moss, Haven gained success with their two albums; ‘Between The Senses’ (2002) and ‘All For a Reason’ (2004) – both produced by the King of Manchester himself, Johnny Marr.
Iwan joined Johnny’s band back in 2013, alongside Haven band-mate, Jack Mitchell. Having just returned from an extensive 16 month tour in support of Johnny’s third solo album, ‘Call The Comet’ the adrenaline must still be flowing as Friday 13th September saw the release of Iwan’s debut single; ‘In The Mire’. Offering the perfect introduction to Iwan’s solo material, the tracks fuzzy intro and brooding undertones lead us into an electro-tinged chorus that redirects us on a more melodic route.
It’s a nice touch – and says a lot about Iwan’s working relationships – to see the involvement of Haven’s Tom Twemlow, who’s responsible for not only the tracks rhythmic beats, but also the mixing and production. As Iwan’s vocals glide their way through ‘Into The Mire’ at ease, you can’t help but think just how much of a shame it is that we’ve only just been introduced to him as a vocalist – though its certainly better late than never!
Iwan Gronow ‘In The Mire’ is out now from all digital stores.
