Niagara are an Turin duo – Gabrielle Ottino and Davide Toma. The duo have just dropped the original ‘Vanillacola’ track and two remixes from their 2014 LP ‘Don’t Take It Personally’. Re-labelled as ‘Vanillacola Re-bottled’ it’s one of the strongest tracks from the album, offering a wonderful melancholic atmosphere that demands to be recognised and embraced.
‘Vanillacola’ starts out with a looped pattern abstract soundscape with a synth bass that fades in building up alongside an epic ambient string section chord. The vocals kick in like a frantically repeated audio life-event commentary with lyrical phrases ‘the smiles you’ll break, a friend you’ve lost, the blue you’re in the sky you’ve seen’. Christian Fennesz’s Remix of the title track is a huge, hissing bubbling abstract noise soundscape, the song melody buried under many layers of effects – his hallmark in many of his works.

Finally, the XIII Remix, takes us in an altogether different direction with a tambourine rhythmic pattern in the background accompanied by laser cannon like blasts and metallic hits. In it’s entirety this 3-track offers an often enjoyable and eclectic release that is an interesting audiophonic experience for listeners.
‘Vanillacola (Re-bottled)’ is out now on Monotreme Records.
