Don Barclay transported his boy-next-door charm from rural Scotland to Kent in 2018, to pursue his lifelong musical dreams. This talented singer-songwriter began teaching himself his craft at the age of 10, inspired by artists such as Ben Howard, Alt J and James Gillespie. His latest single ‘Stronger’ begins with mellow reverberated guitar, before being carried by dream-like harmonies and a robust beat. Throughout, Don Barclay sings candidly to enchanting finger-picked guitar. Don has brought his own flare to the classic singer-songwriter style, and his new song ‘Stronger’ both encaptures and evolves his trademark sound.
We caught up with Don about his latest single. “Stronger is about two people coming together in difficult times and sparking a passion for each other. It speaks of memories ingrained in us from childhood and moving forward in a strong and positive way and using any pain felt from the past as fuel to move on. Another concept is ‘burn yesterday and bring tomorrow home’, one of the lyrics from the song. I once had a dream where my father and I spoke about life then he simply said ‘Now I gotta go’. He passed when I was 17 and I use this in the song lyrics. The song is about hope, passion and strength to be the best version of yourself. Ultimately – ‘Love’.”
Accumulating over 50,000 streams in just a year, Don’s heart-on-sleeve charm has not just attracted a commendable amount of listeners, but also opportunities to work with acclaimed producers. Working with the likes of Matt Barnes (Emeli Sande) and Oz Craggs (Neck Deep, Mallory Knox), Don is set to continue taking his crafts around the live circuits in South England, and beyond.
