Coach & Ref is the collaborative project of longtime studio partners Bleu and Daple. What started out as two artist/songwriters experimenting with recording techniques and equipment (especially vintage synths) in the studio, soon became a serious passion with a desire to share their love of artier micro-genres.
Channeling visions of retro-futurism with a potent fusion of indie and pop, Coach & Ref create nostalgic soundscapes and lo-fi tones that seamlessly dovetail overt melodicism and bangin’ beats, with a mischievous grin that shines through it all.
This is reflected in their latest release, Decisions, which journies deeper into the emotion of happiness. Loaded with off-kilter keys and Bastille-esque synths that are joyfully full of retro sensibilities, Decisions is that one step closer to embarking on a carefree attitude.

Speaking of the track, Mike Taylor explains,
“Decisions is a song that answers a question people ask me all the time “Why are you so damn happy” and the answer for me is, “I choose to be so damn happy”. It’s as simple as that. Of course, no human can be in a great mood all the time but I think happiness is more than an emotion, I think it’s something deeper than that. I choose to go through life focusing on the positive. It’s not an easy thing to do but it forces me to identify and articulate internally what happiness is and if it’s even possible for me to achieve it. Once I was able to define what happiness was for me it made it so much easier to love others and to be loved by others. So when I say “I made the decision to be happy…” what I am really saying is that I decided to go on a quest to find it.”
Coach & Ref support Mike Taylor at The Roxy, L.A on 28 November.
