The Benin-born afrosoul songwriter Shirazee brings together SAINt JHN and Eugy on his debut EP ‘Home and Away’, which has been released alongside a stunning video for lead single ‘Make Wild’.
Channelling the vibrations of Africa whilst intertwining American hip-hop influences, ‘Home and Away’ showcases animated dance beats with underlying personal narratives. Having written for, and collaborated with Afrojack, Sting, Ty Dolla $ign and Kiesza, the Afropop artist has taken inspiration from these influential experiences to create an eclectic body of work. The first release from the EP, ‘Make Wild’, is packed with African beats and vigorous melodies, and is accompanied by a vibrant video to match the vivacity of the track.
The influence of American hip-hop continues throughout the EP and is evident on track ‘Juju’, which sees an organic collaboration with American artist SAINt JHN; discussing the pairing Shirazee says, “he’s a friend first and a rising star in his own right second. When he heard me playing Juju in Toronto and asked to jump on it, I thought he was kidding, until he insisted, Juju issa vibe!”
After studying in Ghana and overcoming homelessness, Shirazee swapped Atlanta for New York City, pursuing his passion of performing on stage. His strong and honest artistry is the result of a complex background, something which has enabled his sound to creatively evolve and enhance.
