Sponsored by MasterCard Priceless Surprises Gwen Stefani performed a show in New York at the weekend where she certainly treated her audience to a priceless surprise – the 2000 people in the Hammerstein Ballroom got to hear the premier of a brand new song. Titled ‘Used To Love You’ and clearly about a breakup, it’s quite safe to say it’s about Bush-frontman Gavin Rossdale. Stefani filed for divorce in August this year, after being married for 13 years.
The former No Doubt singer told the crowd that the song is really special and tweeted saying the song will be her new single. As if the emotional performance from Gwen wasn’t enough, the song also included a projected video showing a close-up of her face and some pretty painful expressions.
Though the lyrics points towards some hard feelings between them, the ex-couple seem to be at good terms. They’ve reportedly decided on joint custody of their three children, stating that they “remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment.”
Stefani has already found that a break-up can be the (not so) secret ingredient to a hit, the question is if ‘Used To Love You’ will affect people as much as No Doubt’s ‘Don’t Speak’; we’ll just have to wait patiently for the official release to find out.
