Metallicahave never been shy about onstage collaborations and whilst some of them have been a little on the questionable side recently (‘Moth Into Flame’ with Lady Gaga, anyone?), a newly released clip of the group playing in Mexico City shows them joined by a true rock legend – Iggy Pop.
Both Metallica and Pop have enjoyed something of a renaissance recently, having both released their respective best works in years with 2016’s ‘Hardwired… To Self Destruct’ and ‘Post Pop Depression’, an album that saw the now 69 year old Pop in as sprightly form as ever. Originally released in 1970, ‘T.V. Eye’ stood as a monolithic slice of proto-punk; here Metallica re-imagine it with typical velocity, and Pop’s delivery admirably manages to capture most of the vicious energy the song had upon its first airing.
The performance came during the third day of a short residency that Metallica had taken up at Mexico City’s Foro Sol arena, playing to an audience of 26,000 each night.
