War Child, the charity helping to rebuild the lives of children affected by conflict presents the Rockumentary Film Festival in partnership with the Independent and Everyman Cinemas. The festival will be accompanied by Q&As with directors, producers and musical talents.
With its strong connection to the music industry, festival is the latest musical fundraising venture for the charity. In 1995 War Child released the ‘Help!’ album raising £1.25 million to support children caught in the conflict in Bosnia. Now, funds raised will support children affected by wars in the Middle East, Afghanistan and Africa. Representing the growth and never-ending suffering from conflicts for these children.
Inspired by the book of the same name, the highly praised documentary Last Shop Standing looks at the rise and slow decline of record industry and praises the ongoing support to keep independent record shops alive within the continually changing climate of music consumption. The screening will be accompanied by a Q&A with Rough Trade’s Nigel House, radio DJ and Inspiral Carpets frontman Clint Boon and veteran of the independent music world Debbie Smith. The Q&A will be chaired by BBC 6 Music’s Matt Everitt.
Before this year’s triumphant rebirth, Shut Up And Play The Hits will provide a fitting curtain call for electronic heroes LCD Soundsystem. Chronicling their then-final show at a sold-out Madison Square Garden as well as the immediate aftermath, the film provides a unique insight into the self-imposed retirement of one of the biggest bands in the world. Al Doyle of the band and Hot Chip fame will be on hand to discuss the huge evening and their live return with BBC 6 Music’s Matt Everitt.
Telling the story of one of the most influential labels in UK history, Upside Down: The Creation Record’s Story provides a close look at the rise and fall of Alan McGee’s empire. Releasing records from The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and introducing the world to a little group called Oasis, the label’s story is a true rollercoaster ride. Director Danny O’Connor and the label founder himself will be in attendance for a very special Q&A.
