Toronto’s Chris A Cummings, better known as Marker Starling latest album ‘Rosy Maze’ is the follow-up to acclaimed 2010 Mantler album ‘Monody’, which featured collaborations with Arcade Fire associate Owen Pallett. ‘Rosy Maze’ is a sanguine dream of McCartney pop, Brazilian bossa nova, 1960s movie soundtrack sparkle and stoned Beach Boys baroque melodies. Across four years and written across fifteen, the record – Cummings’ first as Marker Starling having blazed trails in Canadian avant-pop under the guise of Mantler since 2000 – has slow-burned into existence, maturing with its maker, who became a dad for the first time during its making.
