On December 14th, one of the greatest albums of all time celebrates its 60th birthday. Despite Dave Brubeck having died back in 2012, his son Darius carries an immense legacy on his shoulders.
Alongside an exceptional band, Brubeck is bringing a celebration of Time Out to London’s legendary jazz café to play through the album in full, before taking the audience on a journey through the Live In Poland album which is due for release on the very same day.
In the Time Out set, we can expect to hear perfect renditions of masterful pieces such as ‘Blue Rondo A La Turk’ and ‘Take Five’, each piece exploring the complex time signatures Brubeck was famed for his interest in. The album ranges from the beautiful serenity of ‘Strange Meadow Lark’ to the intense bounce of ‘Pick Up Sticks’, with Darius taking the role his pianist father took on the original, and Dave O’Higgins wielding the instrument once played by the iconic Paul Desmond.
Doubling up as an album launch for Live In Poland, the second set will be an exploration of the works Darius performed when replicating his father’s footsteps on a recent tour of former communist Poland. We can expect jazz standards alongside material from Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond themselves, as well as original work direct from Darius catalogue.
With its setting in the iconic jazz café (which has played host to innumerable icons of the genre), this promises to be a very special celebration of one of the greatest feats of musical composition.
