Canadian indie-rock quintet Hillsburn have announced the release of their debut UK single “Strange Clouds” – taken from their forthcoming ‘The Wilder Beyond’ album. They have also announced a pair of UK shows, including an appearance at The Great Escape Festival.
The opening track from ‘The Wilder Beyond’, ‘Strange Clouds’ sees the band adopting a more guitar-driven sound than on their award-winning debut album ‘In The Battle Years’. While the guitars bring to mind the likes of Broken Social Scene and The National, the chorus revolves around a defiant, choir-like refrain that recalls Florence + The Machine at her festival headlining best.

A proudly independent band, Hillsburn demonstrated their independent ethos in the making of their second record, producing it collectively and recording it in singer/guitarist Paul Aarntzen’s Halifax apartment.
They stuck with that approach in making the video for “Strange Clouds”, the album’s lead single. Also shot and directed by Aarntzen, with the other band members appearing as characters, it follows Hillsburn’s Rosanna Burrill as she runs from and ultimately confronts her fear, symbolized by a wolf-masked figure who pursues her through the forest.
“Strange Clouds is about hanging on and standing up and fighting back, even when you feel like you’re drowning,” says singer Burrill. “Some days that’s harder than others, but we have to keep trying.”
