Canadian enfant terrible Ben Caplan returns to the UK with his much anticipated third album, ‘Old Stock’ – this time accompanied by an award-winning Off-Broadway musical.
Caplan’s supernal songwriting, stage-splintering live shows and Olympian vocal range have earned him the highest accolades back home.
Perpetually touring the globe, demand for his inimitable rabble-rousing Roots, oak-aged Folk, bellowing Blues and carousing Klezmer continues to grow in all four corners.
Caplan’s bear-like figure, resplendent with wild beard and thick glasses is unmistakable. With untameable charisma and chaos, Ben’s storytelling performances enthral audiences and strike terror into the heart of any instrument he sets his maniacal eyes upon.
His resonant baritone vocal is supported by a tapestry of piano, accordion, organ, clarinet, saxophone, violin, drums and acoustic guitar.
Ben Caplan now turns his hand to the multidimensional, with a project encompassing a studio album, live show and theatrical play, which explore a true story of Jewish Romanian refugees fleeing their homeland for Canada in 1908.
In his own words:
“Old Stock is a collection of songs, sounds and stories about what it means to be a stranger in a strange land. It’s about what it means to be a refugee and what it means to be a human being. It’s about humour and tragedy. Joy and suffering. Sex and violence. Love and despair.”
Holding controversial topics to the light with characteristic irreverence and acerbic humour, ‘Old Stock’ delivers a message as relevant today as it was a century ago.
2018 sees him back on the road with extensive live music and theatrical tours and a new line-up of musicians.
