Metallica are known for taking quite some time between albums at this stage of their career. Fans had to wait eight years between 2008’s Death Magnetic and the bands newest album Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, released in 2016.
But it seems that fans may not need to wait as long for the bands next effort.
Bassist Rob Trujillo says that the band is already recording ideas for a new album while out on the road during their WorldWired tour.
“We have a zone we call The Tuning Room, which is a space where we can jam and warm up before the show. We’re always in there coming up with ideas and you may get a few seconds of an idea but everything is recorded, always,” Trujillo told the music podcast.
While fans are probably pleased to hear that the band is already laying down new ideas for an album Trujillo wouldn’t commit to saying when the band could hit the studio to start working on a new project
“We’ve been touring non-stop. It’s been over two years now. At some point, sure, we’ll need to take a little bit of a break. It’s sort of the right thing for us to do because we’ve been going so hard,” the bassist said.
As to what kind of ideas the band have recorded so far Trujillo says that in his mind it appears to be a mix of the bands last two albums.
“I’m excited about the next record because I believe it will also be a culmination of the two records and another journey. There’s no shortage of original ideas, that’s the beauty of being in this band,” he said.
The band do hope to have a new album out much faster than they normally do though.
“It will come a lot sooner than the previous two did,” Trujillo says.
