A Tribe Called Quest are about to release their first album in 18 years, ‘We got it from Here … Thank You 4 Your service,’ and the legendary rap group yesterday unveiled an impressive list of guests on the hotly anticipated release including Kendrick Lamar, Jack White, André 3000, Elton John, Busta Rhymes and Consequence.
The last ATCQ album released was ‘The Love Movement’ in 1998 before the group disbanded due to strain on Phife Dawg and Q-Tip’s relationship, as well as conflicts with their record company. A recent rekindling of that decades-old friendship spurred the creation of ‘We got it from Here … Thank You 4 Your service.’
The album features all original members of ATCQ, Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Jarobi White and Ali Shaheed Muhammad and was recorded entirely in Q-Tip’s home studio in New Jersey. Their commitment to a collaborative, creative atmosphere and close proximity was such that, after reconciling with Q-Tip, Phife commuted twice a month from his home in California to New Jersey to work on the project.
Phife’s untimely death in the midst of recording in March from complications relating to diabetes cast a shadow on the album but the group was determined to complete it and continued work until last month.
‘We got it from Here … Thank You 4 your service’ hits shelves on November 11.
