Butthole Surfers are heading back in to the studio to record album number nine, according to The Austin Chronicle. Their last album came 16 years ago with 2001’s ‘Weird Revolution’.

The news was revealed at an Austin Music Commission meeting by engineer/producer Stuart Sullivan. Recently appointed to the City Council’s music advisory board, Sullivan mentioned that he was about to record with Butthole Surfers while giving a brief overview of his résumé.

That Butthole Surfers would indeed be working on a new album was later confirmed by guitarist Paul Leary. The album is also set to feature the classic line-up of Leary, Gibby Haynes, King Coffey and Jeff Pinkus

With a reputation for being one of the wildest bands around, particularly during their late 1980’s and early 1990’s heyday, the last time they played live was at Day for Night festival in Houston, Texas in December 2016. However, live appearances have been quite rare in more recent years.

Speaking to A.V. Club in 2016, Learly spoke of his reluctance to go out on the road:

I just don’t want to play live anymore. It’s not fun, I don’t like touring. That hour on stage is a whole lot of fun, but the other 23 hours off stage just fucking suck.

The band were booked to headline the inaugural Safe As Milk festival in North Wales back in April. But unfortunately the event subsequently was cancelled due to poor ticket sales. It would have been their first UK appearance for five years.

In other related news, a Kickstarter campaign was started in June with the aim of publishing a biography on the band titled ‘Scatological Alchemy: A Gnostic Biography of the Butthole Surfers‘. It wouldn’t be the first biography about the band though, with ‘Let’s Go to Hell: Scattered Memories of the Butthole Surfers‘ published in mid-2015.
