They have an impressive CV including supporting Justin Bieber on his European Leg of his Purpose Tour and appearing in Charli XCX’s music video ‘Boys’. The vocal harmony group is made up of: Akia Jones, Delleile Ankrah, Kaine Ofoeme, Michael Welch and Ben Sharples. They became internationally recognised from their covers on YouTube, including Drake’s ‘One Day’ reaching nearly 1.5 million views. This led them to be signed by Island Records. Equally they have been as successful with their original material racking over 2 million hits on their single “Oh Lord.” They had a recently successful performance at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, which received raving reviews. Sarah Ebockayuk had the chance to catch up with them.
Please describe to our Gigsoupers a little bit about yourselves:
We are a Quintet from Liverpool and been together for 5-6
years! We started off singing together in a youth group called Positive Impacts. We started to post cover videos on YouTube and got signed off the back of that and have been going from strength to strength after that!
What is the best collective moment you have experienced on your journey?
Justin Bieber! Well, we all have different ones, the KOKO show we did last year is one. We were so gassed! Justin Bieber was amazing, but that KOKO show, we came off the stage and we were so happy, we were hugging each other and almost crying! We were like; we can’t believe we have just done that! Because especially when it is your own crowd and everyone knows your lyrics and stuff it’s different, it’s intimate!
What is in store for Mic Lowry this year, music wise?
The focus is now on our original material, we still do a few covers and stuff just to keep the content up and keep the fan base and everyone happy. But the original music is going to be in same space as the Mood EP we released. But we are experimenting a little with the production to try and make everything more of a UK sound. We are going to put out a few singles this year, so we hope everyone enjoys them!
Any exciting plans for Mic Lowry in 2018?
We are playing The Big Weekender in the Wirral and we are excited about that and the line-up for that is sick, Taya, Yungen, Sneakbo, and JME, yeah really good line up! Around the same time, we are looking at doing our own little European Tour and hit a few venues in a few different countries! Then towards the beginning of autumn looking at doing more UK shows!
What does your musical process entail and where do you get your inspiration from?
We rehearse pretty much every day! Let’s put it that way, we all make suggestions and just play around with the guitar and the chords and go from there. We all listen to the same type of music so in terms of inspiration and that we are normally on the same sort of waves……sometimes!
Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with producers/artists?
Yeah definitely, there are a lot of UK artists that are doing bits at the moments would love to collaborate with like JHus, and Wretch 32 would be an all-time dream! But yeah loads of producers we were working with last year actually making new music so we are going to be working with them again this year to put out new music so it’s going to be exciting!
