TAKE 5: May Roze

May Roze is truly a world musician – a singer/songwriter born and raised in Switzerland but currently residing in London and France. Growing up in a musical family, perhaps it is not surprising she performed on stage for the first time at just 3 years old! We decided to have a chat with the pop R&B star to find out more about her….

When did you realise that you wanted to make music?

I honestly believe I was born knowing that I wanted to make music! In fact.. I think it’s more like a need! My mum always tells me how I used to have hiccups all the time when I was in her belly (for her I was already trying to sing). On stage for the first time at the age of three, I never stopped working for what I believed in.

What or who inspired you?

I’ve always been inspired by a bit everything. From my personal experiences, to what my friends and family are going through, to what I hear or see outside. I mostly like to write about deep feelings, so sadness and pain can be very present in my songs but so is hope and love! In terms of artists, I try to listen to as many genres as possible so many different artists have inspired me such as Michael Jackson, Kate Bush, Marvin Gaye, Solange, FKA Twigs, Emeli Sande … and many more.

Tell us about your latest single ‘Again’ Remix – and also about making the video.

After our previous single « Again » being number 23 in the Commercial Pop UK Charts and number 1 in the Kings of Spins, we wanted to release a remix as a way of saying, “Thank you!” We wanted to give this post breakup song a totally different sound and ended up liking it so much that we decided to properly release it. However, having released a video for the official version, we hadn’t planned on releasing a second video for the remix! A few days later we found ourselves spontaneously shooting the video while on a photoshoot.. and the video had come to life.

You are currently based in London. Tell us five things you love about London and why…….

1The people. You see all kinds of people. All nationalities, all religions, all levels and personalities. I love diversity !

The music. London is the place! You find music everywhere, every time you cross the street. There are so many great artists and places to discover.

The food. I love food and I’m never disappointed here in London. Anywhere, anytime there are so many different restaurants from all over the world!

4 Public transport. For me it’s so positive to think that here in London, I don’t need to use a car anymore! There are buses, trains, subways, all the time. Plus, it’s less pollution!

The city itself. I sometimes spend hours walking in the streets of London. I just love to feel small in that big city.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

I’m really looking forward to seeing what this year has to bring! The year 2018 and the beginning of 2019 have been full of changes for me and I’m sure it’s for some great things to come. There will be new music, new beginnings, some shows to be announced and I’m very excited about this last one! All the shows and updates will be announced on : www.mayroze.com.
