Interview: Described As Kate Bush Meets Billie Eilish, Young Indie-Pop Singer Tizane Discusses Debut Single ‘He Took It All Back’

18-year-old Indie-Pop artist Tizane is due to release her debut single ‘He Took It All Back’ on Friday 11th September. Ahead of the release GIGsoup caught up with Tizane to discuss the single in more detail.

So, what’s up Tizane? What’s on your mind right now?

My mind’s on fire right now and not necessarily in a good way! Life seems to be becoming an ungodly mix of extremes. I’m cursing Covid – it’s just turned life upside down and destroyed so many lives. For me, it seems to have arrived like the unwanted party guest, at the very moment I completed my debut album. I was really looking forward to getting out there and playing – but Covid says no!

Tell us everything about your new single ‘He Took It All Back’.
It’s one of my favourites from the debut album, ‘Cherry’. Sadly the love interest figure is entirely fictional as is always the case with my songs – there’s no Mr or Ms. Right on the horizon but I don’t mind – I don’t care – there’s no room for that in my life at the moment.

You are very young. When did you start writing music and singing?

My mum was in a band and has always sung so it’s been in my life from day dot. I’ve always loved learning instruments and started writing songs after a fashion when I was 10 or 11. By the time I was 16, I was taking the whole thing pretty seriously. I self-produced a couple of tracks and released them digitally.

Really liked your music video. Talk a bit more about it and its interesting story inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’.

I saw the movie on TV and the unnerving mix of isolation and insanity really freaked me – you know? It really stayed with me and I started to think what fun it would be to create a pastiche of it. When we managed to find an abandoned hotel, I just knew we had to do it.

Which animal would best suit your personality?

I’m an animal freak. Our house is like a small farm. Dogs, ducks, cats, chickens – I’m seriously emotionally attached to them all but if I had to pick one, I’m going to say cat!

Who are your musical icons?

Ha! The list is endless. Arianna Grande was my pop entre and I still hold her in some Biblical esteem, but she was replaced in my musical story by her old man, Mac Miller. He became my greatest influence and reference. When he died, he took a part of me with him. I even reference him in the lyric of ‘He Took It All Back’ (I cut you some slack, let’s turn on some Mac and listen to the words within the song).

In the land of the living, I love the production values of Chase Atlantic and the Avant-Garde vocals of artists like Moses Sumney.

What was the first album you purchased?

Probably Fleetwood Macs ‘Rumours’. My mum always used to play it, I still
listen to the songs on it all the time.

Which artists are you listening to right now?

Mac Miller, he recently released a post-mortem album and I’ve been listening to it a lot.

How would you describe your fashion style?

Missing in action!

What does the rest of 2020 hold for you?
Well, I guess like everybody else it’s going to be seriously influenced and impaired by the Covid contagion. I will definitely release another single after ‘He Took It All Back’ and I desperately want Cherry to drop also this year, but in truth, I will be where The Universe wants me to be.
